My Writing Backstory

Hi, I’m Kurt Lawton, an award-winning freelance photographer and writer in Minneapolis, MN.

My award-winning writing and photojournalist career spans 40-plus years as a magazine editor, website content director, public relations manager/writer, and freelance journalist/photographer. Click on the LinkedIn button for details.

Delivering valuable and engaging writing involves a passion for my craft that helps audiences think deeper—offering ideas and practices that improve and sustain a business, environment, and life. National and global travel provided a priceless perspective for reader engagement.

My backstory began on a corn, soybean, and livestock family farm in Iowa, where I learned the value of hard work, entrepreneurship and leadership from my parents, 4-H and FFA.

My dedication to lifelong learning began with a B.S. degree in Agricultural Journalism from Iowa State University in 1980, followed by a Master’s Certificate in Internet Marketing from the University of San Francisco in 2009.

Much of my career success, awards and valuable mentors/friends came from a lifetime of peer-group association involvement with the Agricultural Communicators Network (formerly American Agricultural Editors Association/AAEA) and the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists. Through dozens of committees and leadership roles, I found a valuable voice in advocacy for journalism, agriculture, and democracy. And I take pride in giving back to help future leaders find their voice.

I have been fortunate to receive numerous editorial, writing, and photography awards over the years—from the AAEA, Minnesota Magazine Publications Association, and the National Agri-Marketing Association. My most prestigious achievements include AAEA Photograph of the Year in 2013, AAEA Master Writer and AAEA Fellow in 2018.

My freelance business, Stellar Content, was formed in 2001 when my passions finally merged with a pent-up entrepreneurial dream. Delivering feature stories and photography for clients has been a joy, especially when results push conservation agriculture forward.

My three fantastic young adult children are a massive source of pride, love, and fun—a TV reporter/producer, a communications manager at a startup, and a traveling Registered Nurse/musician.

My important life-work balance is achieved with my partner Shelli, as we enjoy travel, nature hiking, music, craft beer hunting, lake cabin trips, and wonderful times with family and friends.
